About

Dr Ian Reddie LLB MBBS MACLM FRANZCO MAICD

Vitreoretinal Surgeon & Physician. Specialist Ophthalmologist

Dr Ian C Reddie is currently the only fellowship-trained medical and surgical retina specialist north of Mackay. An internationally published scientific author, Dr Reddie is an expert in the field of medical and surgical retina, cataract surgery, and ocular inflammatory disease.

In addition to his private practice, Dr Reddie also serves the community by performing emergency and trauma surgery as a Visiting Medical Officer at Townsville University Hospital. He also holds an appointment as Adjunct Senior Lecturer within the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at James Cook University.

Patients travel to see Dr Reddie from all over North Queensland: Cairns, the Gulf of Carpentaria, Cape York and the Torres Strait, along the western corridor to Mt Isa and into the Northern Territory, and every place in between.

He is the closest retina specialist for all these communities, and his goal is simple: provide world-class retina care to all patients in the greater northern region.

After completing specialist and fellowship training in Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne, Dr Reddie returned with his family to Townsville in 2012. He brought his surgical and diagnostic expertise to serve the people of North Queensland, because of his belief in the local availability of services that are taken for granted in capital cities.

Dr Reddie is a native North Queenslander with deep family connections to the region. His family were tin miners in the Kangaroo Hills district (past Paluma and Hidden Valley), before moving to properties between Richmond then Winton, and finally Hughenden where they ran sheep and cattle for nearly 30 years.

Before studying to become a doctor, Dr Reddie had a successful career as a solicitor in Brisbane, where he worked at McCullough Robertson – Queensland’s largest independent law firm. Working in the commercial litigation division, his practice focussed on trade practices, professional regulation and administrative law.

In 1998 Dr Reddie was admitted to study medicine at The University of Queensland, graduating in 2001. He was President of the University of Queensland Medical Society in 2000.

Before commencing specialty training, Dr Reddie worked as a rural generalist at the Gympie and Atherton hospitals, as a GP trainee.

Recognising his commitment to rural and regional practice, Dr Reddie was accepted into the ophthalmology training programme at the Prince of Wales and Sydney Childrens’ Hospital in Randwick, and at Sydney Eye Hospital.

During his four years of training in Sydney, his surgical aptitude and commitment to excellence was recognised and fostered by his teachers: after completing his final specialist exams, he was encouraged to undertake an additional two years of sub-specialist training in medical and surgical retina at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, and the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital in Melbourne.

In 2021, Dr Reddie was the first ophthalmologist from Australia or New Zealand to be awarded Fellowship of the American Society of Retinal Specialists.
